Tuesday Night Re-Cap

Hi everyone! My name is Jodi Barris – I’m what you might call a “regular” over at The Intown Chabad in Uptown Dallas. Rabbi Zvi Drizin and his Tuesday night young professional classes were my first foray into the Jewish social scene in Dallas when I moved here in February. I own a company called Entertainment Runway and do a lot (a lot) of writing – press releases, articles, pitches, blurbs, you name it, I write it. Zvi recently asked if I’d start writing a little something about our Tuesday night classes each week. So…here we go!

After a one-month hiatus from Tuesday Nights With Zvi, September 1st marked our first meeting back and the turnout was spectacular! All of the “usuals” showed up, and many new faces as well. My favorite thing about Tuesday nights at Chabad is the opportunity to see old friends, meet new people, basically shmooze over some fun conversation and yummy food (sometimes even sushi!), and, let’s face it, even yummier La’ Chaims.

Our topic this week was “Existence vs Living” – Zvi began the discussion opening questions to the crowd such as, “Why do we say La’ Chaim before we drink?” “Why is it that on Shabbat we can’t do anything?!” and, my personal favorite, “Why is it that it seems like no Jewish boy in Dallas can seem to find a nice Jewish girl?!” (This one got QUITE a response!)

The second part of the class was an explanation for each of these questions, the answers to which all related to the discussion of existence vs. living. Zvi discussed that we as Jews should focus on living. By living, Zvi explained, we enjoy life, love our families, spouses, etc., and generally strive to be on a more spiritual level as opposed to focusing on our existence – our physical being, our jobs, how much money we have, how much more we could have, what kinds of clothes we wear, etc.

I know you are going just CRAZY because you want to hear what Zvi said in answer to the Jewish boy finding a nice Jewish girl question, so I’ll go into a bit of detail about that.  He said that in order to be in a relationship and to co exist with another being, we need to give up our ideas of existence to make room for another person to allow them to fully be a part of our lives. Boys have issues with doing this, Zvi explained, and often excuse putting off a meaningful relationship in order to have a successful career before getting involved with someone (Zvi REALLY hates hearing that, fyi). Girls, however, have an easier time of this, and thus, (and I QUOTE), “Girls are smarter. They are more capable of this than boys.”

Moral of my little story? Zvi said girls are smarter than boys. If for no other reason, I’m game for coming back next week ;)

Wishing all of you life over existence, La’ Chaim!
