Title: Ethical Legal Representation in a Non-Constitutional System
Agenda/Description of Program: Although supplemented by ethics committee rulings, formal rules of procedure and various other state and federal laws, many of the duties an American lawyer owes to his clients and to the court fundamentally arise out of rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. By comparing customs of legal practice in Israel (a country without a formal, written constitution) and the United States, panelists will use real-world scenarios to examine how protections granted by the Constitution impact the obligations of a lawyer.
Speaker Bios (non-Jones Day speaker): Professor Ilan Fuchs is an expert in secular and religious law at BarIlan University and is currently a visiting professor at Tulane University Law School. He teaches Israeli constitutional law, legal theory, legal writing, Jewish law, Jewish family law and the history of Chasidism. He has clerked at the Israeli Supreme Court for its Registrar, Judge Oded Shaham and Justice Elyakim Rubenstein. In addition to his bar qualifications, Professor Fuchs also earned a rabbinic ordination from Bar Ilan University’s Institute for Higher Torah Learning.
